Switchboard Upgrades — Common Questions

How do I know if I need a switchboard upgrade?

The most common sign is an old rewirable fuse board — ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers, with no safety switches (RCDs). If your board still has fuses, or you're adding an EV charger, air conditioning, or renovating, it's worth getting it assessed. Many insurers also require a modern switchboard for cover.

What's the difference between fuses and circuit breakers?

Old rewirable fuses use a fusible wire that needs replacing every time it blows, and they don't reliably protect against electric shock. Modern circuit breakers trip automatically and reset with a flick of a switch, and when paired with RCDs (safety switches) they protect people, not just the wiring. Circuit breakers are the current standard for all Victorian homes.

Do I need RCDs (safety switches) on my switchboard?

Yes. Victorian law requires RCDs on all power and lighting circuits in homes. If your board doesn't have them, it's not compliant. We install and test RCDs as part of every switchboard upgrade.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

A standard upgrade is usually completed in a day. We coordinate the supply disconnection and reconnection with your distributor so the outage is as short as possible — typically a few hours during the day.

Does my insurance require a switchboard upgrade?

Many insurers now require a modern switchboard with circuit breakers and RCDs for full cover, particularly on older homes. Some will reduce or decline claims related to old wiring or fuse boards. We can supply written confirmation of the upgrade for your insurer if needed.

What if my switchboard is fire or storm damaged?

We handle emergency switchboard rebuilds after fire, storm, or fault damage. We assess the damage, coordinate with your distributor and insurer where needed, and rebuild the board to a safe, compliant standard as fast as possible — a property with no power isn't liveable or leasable.

Can a switchboard upgrade be done at the same time as other work?

Yes — it's common to combine a switchboard upgrade with an EV charger install, air conditioning, or renovation work in the one visit, since the board often needs extra capacity for these anyway.
