EV Charger Installation: What Melbourne Homeowners Need to Know Before You Buy

Posted 16 July 2026 · Sandy Electrical

We're getting more calls every month from homeowners across the eastern suburbs and Yarra Valley who've bought an EV, or are about to, and want to charge it at home properly. It's a straightforward job for a licensed electrician, but there are a few decisions worth making before you buy anything.

Why a Dedicated Charger Beats a Power Point

You can technically charge an EV from a regular power point, but it's slow — usually 8 to 12 hours for a full charge on a standard 10A socket — and a household power point isn't built for that kind of continuous, high-load draw night after night. A dedicated hardwired charger on its own circuit charges faster, handles the sustained load safely, and is better for your battery over the long run.

What's Actually Involved

Installation means running a dedicated circuit from your switchboard to the charger location — garage, carport, or driveway — sized correctly for the charger's output. We assess your existing switchboard, confirm there's room for the new circuit breaker and RCD protection, and mount the charger somewhere that makes sense for your car's charging port and cable length. Most installs are done in a day.

Do You Need a Switchboard Upgrade First

Not always. If your board is already circuit-breaker and RCD based, we can often add the EV circuit with no upgrade needed. Older fuse-based boards usually need upgrading first, since they don't have the protection or capacity for a dedicated EV circuit. We'll tell you straight which situation you're in when we assess the job — not after we've started.

Which Charger to Buy

We install all the major brands certified to Australian standards — Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Zappi, Fronius Wattpilot, Evnex and others. If you've got solar, models like Zappi and Fronius Wattpilot have built-in solar diversion, so the charger automatically prioritises your own solar generation before pulling from the grid. If you've already bought a unit, that's fine too — just tell us the make and model when you book and we'll install it.

What It Costs

Every property is different — cable run length, switchboard condition, and whether an upgrade is needed all affect the price. That's why we don't quote off the phone: we assess the job on site and give you a fixed, upfront price before any work starts. You're quoted for the job, not billed by the hour, so there are no surprises once we're underway.

Get It Installed Properly

A home EV charger is a job worth getting right the first time — it's on a dedicated circuit, runs a heavy load for hours at a time, and needs to be installed to Australian standards. We handle the full job from switchboard assessment through to charger installation across Mount Evelyn, Lilydale, Croydon, Ringwood and the surrounding areas. See our EV charger installation page for more detail, or just give us a call.

General information only — every property and switchboard is different. Get a licensed electrician to assess your specific setup before buying a charger.
